RISE

Sao Paulo is known for being a mega city, leading to over
population. This crisis leads to social segregation, diving
their city from the poor and upper class. People in the
slums struggle for survival by selling drugs and prostitution
as a common job in the favelas. Favelas are homes first made
from garbage, built on illegal land.

Many civilians find the city as “visuall pollution” as its buildings
rises up, covering their skyline. Graffiti artists in uses this as
inspiration and formed a local calligraphy. Like Sao Paulo’s
skycrapers, their alphabets are tall and vertical as they are
writen on buildings, taking ownership and representing freesom.

The city’s over population is also a downfall when a major
natural disaster comes into place. Sao Paulo is known for
getting constant floods, killing 100’s at a time, and causing
100,000’s of survivors to be stranded and homeless.

What would happen when a mega flood comes; leaving
only the strong survivors stranded?

Could this catastrophe be a road for a new, sustaining civilization?

Rise’ method of creating a community is like a parasite, they
take ownership, repurposing and aiding abandoned structures;
providing resources that will help the start of their future development.

Its form was inspired from the favelas as they align and stack on
top of leftover structures around the city.

This is parasitic architecture. It can and will appropriate various
surfaces and will adapt and survive off of abandoned existing conditions.
